WNBA player Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia in February after Russian authorities found e-cigarettes and cannabis oil in her bag.

In July, she was then sentenced to nine years in prison and fined before the sentence was appealed.

The White House has previously announced that they are doing what they can to bring the Phoenix Mercury player home, and today President Joe Biden will meet Griner's family in Washington, according to the American newspaper The Washington Post.

- Although I wish the purpose of the meeting was to inform the families that the Russians have accepted our offer and that we will bring their loved ones home, unfortunately that is not the case at the moment, says White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

Biden will also meet the family of Paul Whelan, a former marine who was sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage.
