Liverpool hosted Ajax at home at Anfield with the goal of bouncing back after the big loss away to Napoli (4–1) in the first group stage match.

It started well for the Reds who took the lead in the 17th minute.

Mohamed Salah scored the first goal after a pass from Diogo Jota.

But the reply was not long in coming from the guests from Amsterdam.

Just ten minutes later, Mohammed Kudus equalized, received the ball on the penalty area line and pulled to, adamantly cross in behind a chanceless Alisson in Liverpool's goal.

The result looked to stand the match, and Liverpool also looked to storm towards another winless game in the CL opener.

Then centre-back Joel Matip stepped forward and thundered in 2-1 on a header, on a corner in the 89th minute and the matter was settled.

Liverpool won and bounced back from the shock loss last time out.
