With just over two months left until the World Cup in Qatar, Ecuador now risks missing the tournament.

According to the Chilean federation, Ecuador should have played with defender Byron Castillo for eight games, despite the fact that he was born in Colombia.

The case was investigated in May and rejected by Fifa, but then appealed by Chile.

Now, with only three days left until Fifa is to issue a statement on the matter, the British newspaper Daily Mail reveals new evidence in the investigation.

It is about documents and leaked audio files that show that Ecuador should have conducted an investigation into Byron Castillo as early as 2018 - but that that investigation has since been blacked out.

Castillo allegedly gave the wrong date of birth and name

On the audio file, a man, said to be the player Castillo, is heard saying that he came to Ecuador from Colombia to support his family and that he was helped to start playing football in the new country.

- Now I see that all the problems are coming to the surface, the man says, among other things, on the leaked audio file.

According to the documents that have come to light, it also shows that Castillo was born in 1995 and not in 1998 as previously stated.

Also, his name has reportedly changed since he came to Ecuador.

Whether the new evidence will change Fifa's previous decision, and throw Ecuador out of the World Cup, remains to be seen until Thursday when the international football federation is to make a decision on the matter.
