The American Major League Baseball has decided to introduce a 'pitch clock' that limits pitching time from next season and enforce a ban on defensive shifts, despite the opposition of players.

The MLB Secretariat announced today (10th) that, as a result of the vote by the MLB Match Committee, the amendment bill was passed to introduce a pitch clock in the 2023 season, ban a defensive shift, and increase the base size.

Accordingly, starting in the 2023 season, a pitch clock will be introduced to time the pitcher's preparations within 15 to 20 seconds to shorten the game time.

With the new system, a pitcher must start pitching in 15 seconds without a runner or 20 seconds with a runner.

A ball is declared if the pitcher does not start pitching in time.

A strike is declared if the batter does not enter the plate by the time the pitch clock has 8 seconds left.

Defensive shifts, which have been criticized for obstructing the dynamics of baseball and reducing the interest of the game, will also be banned from the 2023 season.

Except for the catcher and pitcher, infielders must stand on each side of second base until the pitcher throws the ball.

At this time, both feet of infielders cannot leave the infield soil part.

Also, it was forbidden to change positions between infielders during the inning.

A ball is declared when a pitcher throws the ball in violation of the rules.

The size of the base has also been increased from 15 square inches to 18 square inches.

The purpose is to increase the size of the base to reduce injuries that occur during base play.

The new rules have raised concerns among MLB players.

It is said that four members of the player's side voted against the introduction of the pitch clock and the ban on the defensive shift in the MLB game committee vote on that day.

However, 6 of the 11 competition committee members voted in favor of the amendment and pushed for approval.

In a statement immediately after the vote, the MLBPA said, "The players members of the committee unanimously opposed the amendment to the rules regarding the introduction of a pitch clock and a ban on the defensive shift. didn't," he said.
