The crowd that had made it to Flushing Meadows was treated to a US Open women's final that at first seemed basically decided, but then turned into something much more exciting.

In the first set, world number one Iga Swiatek was in a class of his own.

She was the queen of New York, ruling the game and having the margins on her side.

When the 21-year-old Pole had built a 3-0 lead in the second set, victory felt within reach.

But then Ons Jabeur's pick-up began.

The final was nerve-wracking at the end

The world number five from Tunisia, who made history as the first African woman to reach the US Open singles final, came back to shake up her previously confident opponent.

Jabeur evened out the odds considerably and was mainly responsible for some heavy serves that eventually took the second set to a tiebreak.

Once there it was also incredibly even, but in the end Swiatek was able to win the match on his own serve.

The Grand Slam title is the 21-year-old's third in her career, after winning the French Open in 2020 and 2022. For the Polish star, today's victory means $2.6 million in prize money and she maintains her ranking as world number one.
