The 27-seeded Russian, who took Olympic silver last summer, is ready for a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time.
He won against the 27-year-old Kyrgios, who had been hoping to reach his second straight Grand Slam final, having reached the Wimbledon final earlier this year.
- I did it!
I did it, Chatyanov happily exclaimed in the victory interview on the court shortly after the match, and continued a little later:
- It was a crazy match.
I expected it to be something like this.
I was ready to run, to fight and play five sets.
We played another match that lasted almost four hours.
And that's probably the only way to beat Nick, I think.
This was the first time that Chatjanov defeated Kyrgios, whom he had faced twice before.
- I'm really proud of myself.
I was really focused from start to finish, says the Russian, who won in sets 7–5, 4–6, 7–5, 6–7 (3–7), 6–4.
