Beer stands will be open around the stadiums just before and just after World Cup matches in Qatar, according to a source confirmed in part by FIFA on Saturday, although the sale of alcohol will remain strictly regulated.

However, it will not be possible to consume alcohol during matches inside the stadiums.

This decision comes after months of delicate discussions with the authorities of the small Muslim emirate in the Gulf, where consuming alcohol in public places is prohibited.

This is a sensitive subject for FIFA, as beer manufacturer Budweiser has been a major sponsor for three decades, while fans around the world are also wondering what to expect at the tournament which will take place from 20 November to December 18.

Respect the local culture

A source with knowledge of the matter clarified that beer stands will be accessible in areas around the stadiums when the gates open for a game and close 30 minutes before the start of each game.

The stands will reopen for a short period after the game, according to the same source.

FIFA did not confirm the times, but a spokesperson explained that the body was committed to "meeting the needs of those who wish to enjoy an alcoholic drink while respecting the local culture".

According to the statement, "ticket holders" will have access to beer "within the perimeter of the stadium before kick-off and after the final whistle".

Coca-Cola for soft drinks

On the other hand, alcohol consumption should only be available from 6:30 p.m. in the fan zone of the “FIFA Fan Festival” in Doha.

There is currently no information about the fan zones organized by the authorities themselves.

Inside stadiums, only non-alcoholic beer and non-alcoholic beverages from Budweiser will be available, the spokesperson added.

Coca-Cola, another major sponsor, has the exclusive right to sell soft drinks in the eight stadiums that will host the World Cup, the first to be held in a Muslim country.

Qatar has planned more than a million visitors during the World Cup on its territory which has less than 3 million inhabitants.
