It was when Luleå met Djurgården in October last year that Peter Holland tore Fredrik Styrman's helmet off and then dealt several blows to his head.

Styrman missed the rest of the season and is still suffering from concussion symptoms when he exerts himself.

That is why he announced today that his career is over.

- Of course, it's very sad for Fredrik that he can't decide for himself when he ends his hockey career.

It's a boring event from last year that he and we may have put behind us, says Luleå's assistant coach Henrik Stridh.

Stridh hopes that he will not suffer the symptoms in civilian life in the future.

- For those of us who have followed Fredrik, it may not come as a surprise that it ends like this.

It's very sad, but now it is what it is.

I hope that Fredrik will have as good and tolerable a life as possible in civilian life, he says.

Erik Gustafsson, 33, supports his former teammate.

- It is extremely sad when you have to give up on premises other than your own.

I have spoken to Fredrik many times during the year and I think he has had plenty of time to make this decision.

If there's anyone who can handle it well, it's him.

Because he has had this long, he is well prepared for a life outside of ice hockey, he says.

Styrman scored 22 points in 260 regular season games in the SHL.
