Max Verstappen continues to show his superiority in the Red Bull car.

Despite an engine penalty and a 14th place on the grid, he quickly climbed through the field to a sea of cheering orange-clad Verstappen supporters.

Already on lap 18 he passed Ferrari's Carlos Sainz to take the lead, such an early lead does not lose Verstappen.

The start would prove to be as chaotic as starts can often be in Formula 1. On the first lap, Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton tried to overtake Alpine's Fernando Alonso, something that would prove fatal for the Briton.

- It was a hectic first lap where I just tried to avoid trouble, so much happened in front of me, says Verstappen in the victory interview.

Drove out in the gravel

Alonso appeared to give way on the outside to Hamilton who desperately wanted the inside lap.

Then there was no room for the veteran who drove the Mercedes car from behind and gave Hamilton a small aerial flight which forced him to abort the journey.

Alonso was able to continue and finished sixth.

On the same lap, Williams' Nicholas Latifi drove into the gravel and ran the car into Valtteri Bottas.

Latifi was able to continue but Bottas was forced to retire in the Alfa Romeo car.

At the top there was a so-called "one-two" with Verstappen at the top and Red Bull's other driver Sergio Pérez in second place - a full 17 seconds behind.

Sainz grabbed the final podium spot two seconds ahead of George Russell, Mercedes.

- Once we got together after the safety car, the car was completely unreal, says Verstappen.
