British professional cyclist Adam Yates has won the Deutschland Tour.

The 30-year-old completed his overall victory on Sunday in Stuttgart after taking the red jersey from the overall leader at the top of the Schauinsland the day before.

In the sprint of a leading group after 186.6 kilometers from Schiltach to the Baden-Württemberg state capital with five smaller climbs, the day's victory was secured by the Spaniard Pello Bilbao, who finished second, 22 seconds behind Yates.

Second of the day was the Portuguese Ruben Guerreiro ahead of Augsburg's Georg Zimmermann.

In fourth place overall, the 24-year-old Zimmermann from the Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert team missed the final podium by three seconds.

"I'm super happy with my performance," said Zimmermann on ZDF, "it was a very fast, hard race.

Perfect.” He had even tried an attack in the final sprint.

Five days of racing – including the prologue in Weimar – were on the program for the Deutschland Tour.

The field covered around 700 km with 11,000 meters of altitude difference.

With various interruptions, the tour has been held since 1911, and there has been a new edition since 2018.

Yates from the British team Ineos is the successor to Nils Politt, who took overall victory last year.

The tour was disappointing for the home team Bora-hansgrohe.

The Raublinger racing team had figured things out with last year's winner Politt and the two climbing specialists Emanuel Buchmann and Patrick Konrad, but in the end remained without a stage win and drivers in the top five in the overall ranking.
