Traffic imposed last year 4.79 million fines of all kinds and income for this chapter

more than 444 million euros.

The latter is, in fact, the highest figure achieved by the DGT in the last 10 years,

but not in the case of sanctions since, in 2015, for example, there were 4.815 million fines.

In any case, it does represent 2.3% more than in 2019;

and 23.6% more than in 2020, when the coronavirus restrictions drastically reduced mobility.

This is revealed by a study carried out by

Associated European Motorists based on data published by the DGT itself.

The report does not take into account the data for Catalonia or the Basque Country,

since the competences in this matter are transferred to both regions.

Most for speeding

The study reveals that, as usual,

speeding represents the majority of complaints: two out of three.

And, particularly, the good performance of camouflaged radars stands out.

In fact, while in 2021 the devices placed in fixed points hunted 2,192 million vehicles (1.87% less),

those shipped in cars or placed on tripods, imposed 863,776 complaints.

That is, 21.7% more

than in 2019 (and almost 29 percentage points more than in 2020).

By types of sanctions

After speeding, the second most numerous category were

offenses for not having passed the ITV or being unfavorable (591,077),

with an increase of 2.5% compared to the 2019 figures;

driving without a license (133,126)

, which increased by 18.3%;

not using a seat belt (105,818),

which decreased by 8.4%;

and driving using a mobile phone (101,443), with an increase of 3.7% As a positive fact, AEA highlights in its report the

32.5% reduction in complaints for driving exceeding the permitted alcohol

level (50,613 complaints compared to the 83,184 made in 2019);

reckless driving (-23.58%) and prohibited overtaking (-15.92%).

They go up for drugs or driving without a license

On the contrary, the association warns of the worrying data in cases of

driving with the presence of drugs: in two years they have increased by 40%,

going from 36,225 complaints in 2019 to 50,613 in 2021. Those related to cyclists also increase (31, 32%) and driving without a license (18.31%).

Results by regions

By Autonomous Community,

complaints increased in 2021 in Aragón (58.5%);

Navarre (46.8%);

Castile and Leon (39.1%);

Galicia (33.5%);

Cantabria (31.8%);

Murcia (12.6%);

Canary Islands (6.1%);

Asturias (2.2%) and Valencian Community (1.9%).

On the contrary,

they have decreased

in the autonomous cities of

Ceuta (-43.9%) and Melilla (-36.8%), and in the communities of Madrid (-28.7%);

Castile-La Mancha (-17.1%)

;

La Rioja (-12.7%);

Andalusia (9.8%);

Extremadura (-5.5%) and Balearic Islands (2.2%).

Madrid, leader in complaints per km

Although

Andalusia was the community where the most complaints were made in absolute terms (981,605),

although the Community of Madrid is where the largest number of infractions were detected based on the length of its road network (130 complaints per kilometer ), with Extremadura at the other extreme (15 complaints/km).

Regarding the relationship between the number of vehicles and fines, the classification is led by Castilla y León, (0.32 complaints per vehicle),

followed by Navarra (0.26) and Galicia (0.24).

On the contrary, in Ceuta and Melilla fewer complaints have been recorded, both in absolute numbers (7,252 complaints) and in terms of the vehicle fleet (0.05 complaints per vehicle).
