On Monday, Ellen White, England's leading scorer on the women's side, announced that she is ending her football career after this summer's European Championship gold on home soil.

Now another one of the EC heroes chooses to give thanks.

Jill Scott, who jumped into the final victory against Germany, is also putting her football boots on the shelf.

She says, however, that it is not a sad farewell.

“I have to say goodbye to football, but we will make this a celebration.

No sad faces!

We've had way too much fun to mourn," the 35-year-old writes in a letter on The Players Tribune and goes on to write that she got the perfect ending:

“If you had told me I would live long enough to witness 90,000 people crammed into Wembley for a Women's European Championship final?

And that I would play in it?

Not possible."

Jill Scott made her national team debut in 2006 and was noted for a total of 163 international matches for "the Lionesses" - second most after Fara Williams (172) - and 27 goals.

In club contexts, Sunderland-bred Scott is best remembered for her years at Manchester City, with whom she won the Super League in 2017.
