It was almost a year ago that the qualifying match between Brazil and Argentina in São Paulo was interrupted after representatives of a Brazilian health authority rushed onto the pitch.

The representatives wanted to stop four Argentine players from playing, as their covid protocols were not approved.

The match was canceled and earlier this year the international football association Fifa decided that it should be replayed, despite both nations being ready for the World Cup, which makes the match meaningless.

Brazil's captain Tite does not want to play the match as he believes the risk of injuries, suspensions and a potential boycott from Argentina is too high.

This is stated by the president of the Brazilian association, Ednaldo Rodrigues.

"We will contact Fifa so that this match is not played.

I will do everything to make our coach's wish come true.

Our priority is to win the WC in Qatar.

If that match is not desired by our coaching staff, we will work to prevent it from being played," he says in a statement.

According to Brazilian media, Brazil instead hopes to play two friendlies in Europe before this winter's World Cup tournament in Qatar.

Brazil have been drawn in Group G alongside Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon.

Argentina enters Group C with Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia.
