Abu Dhabi International Festival competitions will be held in its 28th edition from 16 to 26 January, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and under the supervision of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Club. Abu Dhabi Chess and Mind Games, at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Abu Dhabi (Corniche), with a total prize pool of 300,000 dirhams, and the participation of more than 1,000 male and female players from 54 countries, distributed in 11 different tournaments.

A press release from the Abu Dhabi Sports Council stated that: “The festival’s activities were divided into 11 different tournaments that suit the levels and age groups of participants, led by the Masters Championship, including the Championship of the First Line of Defense for Speed ​​Chess, which is being organized for the second time, in which cadres working in health facilities and the army participate. And the police, in appreciation of their exceptional efforts to protect the UAE community during the pandemic.”

The organizing committee of the festival, headed by Hussein Al Khoury, announced the details of the upcoming version in a press conference held yesterday at the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, in the presence of the Executive Director of the Sports Development Sector in the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, Talal Al Hashemi, Vice Chairman of the Jury Committee Ahmed Al Nuaimi, and Director of the Radisson Blu Hotel Abu Dhabi (Corniche) Bernard O’Neill. .

For his part, Hussein Al-Khoury pointed out that the festival has become one of the most important chess events on the international chess map and is entering its 28th year in this session, after becoming the focus of attention of most international players from all over the world.

Al-Khoury said: “What we witnessed through our position in the Organizing Committee of the great demand for participation in the festival by the first-class players in the world this year makes us believe that we are on the right track, especially since the number of participants exceeds 1,000 male and female players from 54 different nationalities distributed over 11 championships. The organizing committee took into account the technical and age levels of the players, noting that this year’s festival tops the international festivals in terms of the game in terms of the number of participants, surpassing several prestigious international festivals.”

A group of international players will participate in the upcoming edition, including Wang Hao from China, Sinan Gugirov from Russia, Yevgeny Tomashevsky from Russia, Alexander Predik from Russia, Anton Korpov from Ukraine, Arjun Irigaisi from India, Basem Amin from Egypt, and the Emirates Golden Boy Salem Abdul Rahman.

Most of the UAE players from all age groups of both sexes will participate in the festival, led by Imran Al Hosani, 19, who won the West Asian Youth Championship, the Arab Youth Championship and the Emirates Men's Championship.
