The German Football Association decided today, Thursday, to give up the title of "Die Mannschaft" (team) for the first team after widespread criticism inside the country, although it can be distinguished abroad.

"Die Mannschaft" became the official description for Germany a year after winning its fourth World Cup title in Brazil 2014, and was part of promoting the national team around the world.

But the exit from the first round of the 2018 World Cup and the round of 16 in the European Championship last year did not make the name popular with the frustrated German fans.

Football officials, including Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke, said the name disrespected other teams and indicated arrogance.

The president of the German Football Association, Bernd Neuendow, said that a recent survey showed that it was time to give up this title.

"According to polls and analyzes, the title of "De Manchaft" carries a high degree of discrimination, especially outside the country, and is based on the team spirit and its success," he said in a statement.

"But the reality is also that among the masses inside the country he is facing criticism and has become part of the emotional discussions," he added.

What does "De Manschaft" mean and why is it rejected?

It is noteworthy that the German national team was known for a long time under the name "Die Mannschaft" and in German (Die Mannschaft), which means "the team", but the official name came in 2015, a year after winning the World Cup in Brazil.

The fans reject the name because it means "the team" as if there is no other team, and 80% of the fans prefer the name "Die Deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft", which means the German football team.

The negative results achieved by the national team in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and continued until now;

To a process of rethinking the name, the fans rejected the name and described it as exaggerated, as Lothar Matthaus - former Bayern Munich player - and Hans Joachim Watzke demanded;

The president of the German League canceled the name.

Last June, the Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung reported that 78.4% of the 5,300 votes of the Bundesliga fans and clients wanted the name to be cancelled.

Germany qualified for the World Cup finals in Qatar, which begins in November.
