Manchester City fans will use high-tech scarves next season

Fans of the English Premier League champions Manchester City will be treated to the latest wearable technology next season as the humble football scarf will be updated with a bio-sensor built into its fabric to monitor emotional, vital and movement data of fans.

Using the bio-sensor Imotebit that is discreetly placed on the neck, the "electronically connected scarf" captures the body's vital signals throughout the match.

It also records a range of biometrics, including heart rate, body temperature and emotional responses, and provides information about how fans feel at different moments.

“In our work with City over the past few years, we have constantly looked for ways to connect fans to the sport they love, at other levels,” said Ashley Marusak, Cisco’s director of global sports marketing who helped develop the product. We will try it together, as we seek to better understand and measure the ups and downs of the football fan base and how the game affects fans not only emotionally, but also physically.”

The "electronic scarf" will help them understand the emotions associated with the vital functions experienced by fans, said Ryan Shaw, director of innovations at Ocatgon UK, which has partnered with Cisco on the project.

"Creating this technology from scratch has been a fantastic journey, and we are very excited about how much this scarf can introduce us to the fans and the club's culture."
