Andrea Petkovic was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament at Rothenbaum in Hamburg.

The 34-year-old last year's finalist had to retire due to injury in a duel with world number two Anett Kontaveit from Estonia at a score of 0:6, 0:2.

Petkovic apparently suffered an adductor injury during the match and left the pitch with tears in his eyes.

This means that all eleven German participants in the individual competitions of the combined men's and women's event have been eliminated.

Petkovic came under pressure from the start against Kontaveit, trained by German coach Torben Beltz.

The extremely aggressive and almost flawless top player constantly attacked the too harmless service of the German number two, who didn't lose a ball and looked for solutions against the favorite.

The former ninth in the world rankings had stated before the game that they were still particularly attracted to clashes with opponents from the absolute top and pushed them further.

Against Kontaveit, her physical problems got worse at the end of the first set and Petkovic had to be treated.

She tried again at the beginning of the second set, but then had to give up, deeply disappointed.
