Austria would prove unexpectedly difficult for Germany to break down - and they would also be the team with the most clear-cut chances in the opening half.

But in the 25th minute it was Germany who could take the lead, when Klara Bühl broke free in the offensive penalty area and played to Lina Magull who safely slotted in 1-0 behind Manuela Zinsberger.

Germany came out strong after the break, but were shaken when within minutes Austria were two shots on target from equalizing.

Austria dots bar and post

Although several sharp chances came for both teams, it took until the 90th minute before Germany could make it 2-0 through Alexandra Popp and secure advancement.

Then Zinsberger had kicked and missed seeing Popp - who could meet the ball and easily put it straight into the goal.

Merle Frohms thus managed to keep a clean sheet - which she has done throughout the championship so far.

Either France or the Netherlands await in the semi-finals.
