Jeruto, who has Kenyan roots but competes for Kazakhstan, had a tough deal with Ethiopians Werkuha Getachew and Mekides Abebe for the medals but was able to hold off in the lead and run into the third best time of all time.

- When I was on the starting line I was a little scared of my friends from Ethiopia and it was tough I decided to go up in the lead and control the race, says Jeruto who missed the Olympics last year because she then went through a process to change countries .

26-year-old Jeruto won the Diamond League final last year and became African champion in 2016 before taking the biggest victory of her career at Hayward Field.

Five of the first seven runners set either a national record or a personal record.
