It was a happy, but somewhat insecure Simon Pettersson who met the media the day before he enters the discussion ring for qualifying.

The heavy season he has behind him means that his self-confidence is not at its peak and the final place is not something he takes for granted.

What have you been struggling with this year?

- Basically, it has been a little too much will, and that I have made it more difficult than it is by looking for things that do not really exist.

Lately it has gone better and I have made it a little easier.

I feel more comfortable and secure with life here over the past month, says the 28-year-old.

Trying to build trust

At the introductory camp in the USA, he has worked with throwing with more certainty and would rather put "a good 95% throw" than take in too much.

But he does not feel that he has all the questions answered.

- I have not received so many answers.

But there have been a few fewer misses and a better feeling.

I have had extremely many misses earlier this year that I really should not have.

You only get three throws in the qualifiers and one of them has to sit, that's what you are trying to build some confidence in.

Wants to improve the result from Doha 2019

If Daniel Ståhl has high medal hopes, the reality is different for Pettersson.

This year he has thrown the longest 65.94 in Iceland.

- If you look at how the season has been, it would be strange to start talking medals.

But I have a ninth place as the best at the World Cup (2019 in Doha).

The goal is to go to the final and improve in ninth place.

The discus qualifier starts at 02.05 tonight and is broadcast on SVT1.
