Six stages and a rest day.

The riders of the Tour de France are entitled to a big shot of the Southwest during this 109th edition.

On Sunday July 17, the peloton will leave Rodez, in Aveyron, to reach Carcassonne around 5:30 p.m.

I can already see it quibble because the prefecture of Aude is not in the “cultural South-West” as it is generally thought of.

But the city is less than 1h15 from Toulouse, via the very busy A61.

This 15th stage, which is not very hilly, will pass through pretty corners such as the Montagne Noire, around Saint-Ferréol, with the highest point of the day, the Côte des Cammazes (647 m).

The Tour will bask in Carcassonne on July 18, before returning to Foix on the 19th (arrival expected shortly before 5 p.m.).

The opportunity to spend the day in Limoux, Tarascon-sur-Ariège, Massat or at the foot of the very rustic wall of Péguère (1,375 m, 9.3 km at 7.9%) from where the runners will descend towards the chief- place of Ariège.

Two summit finishes

But for lovers of "real" mountains and nights spent in tents or motorhomes in the mythical passes of the Pyrenees (even if the Tourmalet is absent this year), it will be necessary to focus on the 17th and 18th stages.

On Wednesday July 20, the Col d'Aspin, the Hourquette d'Ancizan and the Col de Val Louron-Azet will be on the menu from Saint-Gaudens up to the 8 km climb (at 7.8%) towards Peyragudes (1,580 m), where the best are expected around 5 p.m.

On Thursday July 21, it is shortly before 5.30 p.m. that the winner should reach Hautacam (1,520 m) from Lourdes, at the cost of a final ascent of 13.6 km (at 7.8%) after those of the essential col Aubisque and the lesser known Col de Spandelles.

The 19th stage between Castelnau-Magnoac, the stronghold of the captain of the XV of France Antoine Dupont in the Hautes-Pyrénées, and Cahors will be much flatter but not devoid of beauty.

The splendors of Auch, Auvillar, Lauzerte or Moncuq, among others, will be broadcast in mondiovision, as will the images of the Valentré bridge in the Lot prefecture, which will be reached around 5:16 p.m.

Our Tour de France dossier

Lovers of exceptional landscapes will also be served on the afternoon of Saturday July 23 with the 40.7 km time trial between Lacapelle-Marival and the magnificent village of Rocamadour.

This will be the last opportunity for the ambitious to reverse the course of things in this Tour de France, before the very urban final stage on July 24 between Paris-La Défense Arena and the traditional finish on the Champs-Elysées.
