The Canadian Ice Hockey Federation has received strong criticism in its home country for the way they handled the suspected rape that took place in 2018. Among other things, because they did not do enough to find out exactly what happened.

The union has agreed on a sum of damages with the young woman, and therefore the case has not been taken to court.

It was four years after the incident, and it happened after it became public that several players in the JVM team in 2018 have committed sexual abuse against a young woman.

Now the union writes in the open letter that trust is something you deserve, not something you get.

And that they understand that people are angry and disappointed with what happened.

- We know that we have not done enough to address what some players from the JVM team 2018 did, nor to get rid of the bad cultural behaviors in our sport, the association writes.

May be lifelong suspension

Furthermore, the union writes that they will reopen the investigation that was done earlier, and that it will be led by an independent third party.

And according to the union, there may be a lifelong suspension from all types of events that the union participates in.

They will require all players, coaches and people around the team to participate in training to counteract sexual violence and consent.

A full review of the union's management must also be carried out.

In addition, the association will create a way to anonymously report irregularities in ice hockey, so that victims dare to tell what happened.

This is to get rid of the systematic problems that hockey has.
