Meet the new club of German Mesut Ozil

Turkish club Basaksehir announced that former German international Mesut Ozil joined its ranks on a one-year contract, the day after announcing his departure from Fenerbahce.

"Our club signed a one-year contract, renewable for another year, with Ozil," the 2020 Turkish champion said in a statement.

Fenerbahce had announced, on Wednesday, that Ozil would leave the team two years before the expiration of his contract with a "mutual agreement", after he was excluded from the first team at the end of last March.

The former Arsenal player joined the Turkish club less than a year and a half ago, but was excluded in the spring from the squad after entering into a conflict with the management.

Last season, Basaksehir ranked fourth in the Turkish League, and the club is famous for its close relations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was present at the wedding of Ozil and former Miss Turkey Amina Gulse.

The player of Turkish origin, who won the World Cup with the German national team in 2014 in Brazil, was criticized in Germany shortly before the World Cup in Russia, because of a picture of him with Erdogan.

After denouncing the "racist" attacks on him, he announced his international retirement after the 2018 World Cup.
