After the chaos at the Stade de France surrounding the Champions League final at the end of May, the French Senate passed a devastating verdict after an investigation.

There was a chain of functional failures at all levels and omissions in the preparation, it said at the presentation of the final report on Wednesday in Paris.

A large number of factors had been misjudged, so that the football final ended in a fiasco.

In an unclear context, nobody felt responsible.

The safety of the fans was not sufficiently guaranteed.

The reason for the failure was wrong decisions by the police prefecture and not the presence of the British fans at the stadium.

Sharp criticism of the interior minister

The Senate recommended the use of forgery-proof electronic tickets, better training for stadium staff, and better communication and management of visitor flows in real time.

The Senate was harsh on Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

He did not react appropriately to the situation and events and made an incorrect analysis.

As stated by the minister, there was a mass rush of fans to the stadium, many of whom had fake tickets.

However, this was not the reason for the chaos at the stadium.

The police in Paris registered more than 100 arrests and 230 injuries around the final between winners Real Madrid (1-0) and Liverpool FC.

The European Football Union UEFA explained the chaos at the entrance to the high number of fans without valid tickets and commissioned an independent investigation report.

After the chaos at the final, the Paris police prefect will have to vacate his post next week, according to media reports.

Didier Lallement will be recalled from his top post on July 20, it said.

Lallement had admitted police failure and spoke of obvious failure in the Senate Interior Committee.
