The Swedes Johan Kristoffersson and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky have started this season's Extreme E very well.

They won the first round and they also thought they had won in Sardinia.

Johan Kristoffersson started best, but right at the beginning the accident also occurred.

He collided with the 60-year-old rally legend Carlos Sainz whose car ended up upside down.

The race was temporarily interrupted and Sainz managed to climb out of the car.

"Carlos was kept conscious and in good spirits, but he will go to the hospital for further examinations," Extreme E wrote on Twitter.

Åhlin-Kottulinsky then took over from Kristoffersson and extended the lead.

They were then declared victorious, but a couple of hours later the news came that they had received a 30-second time penalty for the collision with Sainz.

Thus, they were moved down to a third place and instead the Americans Kyle LeDuc and Sara Price in Chip Ganassi Racing took their first victory.

Timo Scheider and Tamara Molinaro in Xite Energy Racing came second.

The next competition in Extreme E will also be decided in Sardinia and it starts on Saturday.
