Show jumper Gerrit Nieberg surprisingly won the Grand Prix of Aachen at the end of the CHIO.

The 29-year-old from Sendenhorst beat Ben in front of 40,000 spectators on Sunday.

In the jump-off of the 1.5 million euro test, he and his eleven-year-old gelding were the last to show the fastest fault-free ride and pushed the Briton Scott Brash on Jefferson into second place.

Third place went to the Belgian Nicola Philippaerts on Katanga.

Last year's winner Daniel Deußer finished fourth with Killer Queen, McLain Ward from the USA on Azur was the only one who had a down in the jump-off and finished fifth.

Nieberg received 500,000 euros for his victory.
