On Thursday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a preliminary list of 30 nominees for the 2022 African Player of the Year award, which included prominent names such as the Egyptian Mohamed Salah, the Algerian Riyad Mahrez and the Senegalese Sadio Mane.


The award ceremony will be held in the Moroccan capital, Rabat, on July 21, knowing that it was canceled in the past two years due to the Corona pandemic.


The last award ceremony for the best in Africa was held in 2019 in the Egyptian city of Hurghada, and he won the award for the best African player at the time, Mane, who will move as of next season to Bayern Munich, after a competition with Salah, his former teammate in Liverpool.


Salah had previously won the award in 2017 and 2018, after it was for Mahrez in 2016, after his contribution to Leicester City's achievement of a resounding surprise by being crowned champion of England before moving to Manchester City.


This year, Mane won the African Nations Cup and contributed to his country's qualification to the 2022 World Cup, at the expense of Egypt and Salah on both occasions, but they achieved together in Liverpool the FA Cup and the League, while they lost the Champions League final against Real Madrid and failed to achieve the League title. The Englishman is one point ahead of Manchester City, which Mahrez also contributed to crowning the English champion.


The nominees were chosen by a panel of technical experts, African football legends and journalists.


The winners for each category will be determined by a voting committee consisting of the technical committee of the federation, journalists, coaches, and leaders of member federations and clubs.


There will be many awards to be presented, including the best African player, best young player, best team, best coach, goal of the year and best club, among other prizes.


In addition to this trio, other African players were nominated for the Best Player award, most notably Franck Kissier (AC Milan, Ivory Coast), Sebastian Haller (Ajax Amsterdam, Ivory Coast), Mohamed Abdel Moneim (Al Ahly of Egypt, Egypt), Mohamed Elneny (Arsenal).
