"We will take all violations of this Code and any case of discrimination very seriously"

The World Cup organizers responded when NRK, SVT and DR in May revealed that some World Cup hotels said no to accepting gay couples.

Unfulfilled promises

It was something that stood in stark contrast to the promises that came from Fifa, that everyone should be welcome during the World Cup.

After that, SVT has on several occasions contacted the WC's organizing committee, to investigate how they handled the issue.

But despite the fact that the organizing committee of the organizing committee has repeatedly promised that they will respond "within a few days", they have never given any further statement.

A hotel claimed to be uninformed

One of the issues we wanted to investigate is the fact that one of the hotels that did not want to receive gay guests, the Wyndham Grand Regency, stated to us that they had not been informed that they were expected to receive gay guests, despite the World Cup organizers in their sustainability protocols stated that all their partners must live up to a number of criteria - including that everyone should be welcome to the World Cup.

In addition to that question (Is it correct that Wyndham has not received official information that they must accept homosexual guests?) We have asked the following questions:

  • In an earlier reply to us, you said that all hotels must comply with the rules that you have in your sustainability protocol.

In what way have you informed the hotels about it, and what have you done to follow up that they are met?

  • What have you done after finding out that several of your hotels do not accept LGBTQ people?

  • Have you done anything to ensure that hotels live up to human rights and the criteria you have set out in your sustainability protocol?

  • What background checks did you do before you listed the current hotels as World Cup hotels?

Received several reminders

The questions were sent to the World Cup organizers for the first time on 12 May.

Since then, SVT, NRK and DR have sent reminders to the World Cup organizers five times.

First twice in May, then three times in June.

Each time they have said that they are working on an answer, and that it will come "Within a few days".

Fifa has responded

Fifa has received similar questions.

In a reply, dated June 3, they wrote, among other things:

"All hotels that receive guests during the World Cup must act in a non-discriminatory manner, which is something that Fifa and its Qatari partners have clarified in recent weeks.

While extra pressure has been made where hotel employees, according to your report, said that gay couples were not welcome, all other hotels have also been reminded of their obligations ”.

Remaining on the WC list

In its response, Fifa also pointed out that those hotels that do not meet the criteria will have their contracts terminated.

However, the three hotels that told us that gay guests were not welcome are still on the list of official World Cup hotels.

On Sunday, Lise Klaveness, chairwoman of the Norwegian Football Association, traveled with a delegation from the European Football Association, Uefa.

The delegation (where the Swedish Football Association's general secretary Håkan Sjöstand is with via digital link), will, among other things, have a meeting with the World Cup organizer and Qatari authorities.

"Must press"

Among other things, they will address the rights of homosexuals.

- But there we know that it is virtually impossible to achieve a breakthrough.

Nevertheless, we must press on and raise the issues.

Qatar and the World Cup Committee have guaranteed the safety of LGBTQ people during the championship, so the goal for us must be to understand in what way it is guaranteed, says Klaveness, and develops:

- In what way do they work against this towards, for example, police and hotels, we have not specified yet.
