For the first time this Monday, Nick McCarthy publicly spoke of his homosexuality, a rare thing in sport, and even more in rugby.

A big step for the melee half of the Leinster, who had already come out with his teammates in January.

"I was obviously quite nervous, but I'm really happy to have done it," he explains on his club's website, confiding that he was affected by the situation for a long time.

"I planned to stop rugby because I did not think I could come out while playing rugby.

However, the 27 -year -old quickly received the support of his club, his coach Leo Cullen and his teammates.
