This weekend, the International Swimming Federation decided that transgender people born as men may only participate in the women's class if they have undergone a gender reassignment before the age of twelve.

Lars Frölander fears that despite the new regulations, people born as men will be seen distorting competition on the women's side.

- I think it can be the beginning of the end for biological women's opportunity to compete on equal terms.

I have a hard time seeing that you should be able to do it equally.

That biologically born men should have the same conditions as biologically born women.

No matter what they do with their hormones, there are many other biological benefits to being born as a man, he says.

The Swedish union saw today's message as a step in the right direction.

Then the age limit for when you should have made your gender correction is twelve years.

- I think you should make your own class for trans people.

In wrestling, for example, not even men compete against men, but you have different weight classes.

Even if you undergo a gender correction already at the age of twelve, I do not think that it inhibits all male development in adolescence.

There is also very little information to know how it will actually be.

Allowed from the age of 18 in Sweden

Lia Thomas became historic in March with her victory in the college championship's 500 yards free by being the first person born to win a women's class.

Thomas will not be allowed to do that again.

In Sweden, gender-correcting abdominal surgery is permitted from the age of 18.

In 2018, the government proposed a new law that would make it allowed from the age of 15.

But the National Board of Health and Welfare changed its mind and said no to the bill in connection with a review of SVT, it showed that the factual information on which the proposal was based was incorrect.
