"We understand that this option may be more than acceptable (...) Aragón expresses the position that we have been working on, as I have just publicly defended."

This is how José Ángel Hierro

, Aragón coach,

responds when asked about his position by

Alejandro Blanco

, president of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), at the sixth and last technical meeting of the candidacy for the 2030 Winter Olympics, to be carried out in the territories of the Aragonese community and Catalonia, carried out electronically, and which concludes with the vote on the agreed distribution.

Shortly before, another of the technicians appointed by the Aragonese community,

Carlos Lannes

, refers to the little conflict that the agreement had generated between them: "The technical issue had been discussed for five minutes."

The sixth and last meeting took place on March 22 and was recorded by the COE, like all the others.

Although its content has not transpired, EL MUNDO has had access to some of the statements that were made and that contradict the statements made by the president of Aragón,

Javier Lambán

, in the sense that the technicians of his community were ignored.

Some of them have subsequently referred to disagreements that are not in line with what was stated, at least, in the meetings that this newspaper has been able to learn about, according to the recordings.

In fact, in this last and sixth meeting, the only one who manifests himself against the terms of the agreement is the representative of Catalonia,

Aleix Villatoro

, because of the distribution of the ice tests.

Laura Vilagrà

, Minister of the Presidency of the Generalitat, rectified this refusal by means of a telephone call after that last meeting, in which the representative of the Government,

Víctor Franco

, also spoke in favour, among others .

The result was nine votes in favor and three against, although not from the representatives of Aragon.

In this way, the Aragonese community was left with 54 tests for 42 for Catalonia.

"We want cross-country skiing and biathlon"

The element that, according to Lambán, was unacceptable in the agreement was the fact that alpine skiing was based in Catalonia, understanding that it was the one that had the greatest role.

When this distribution was to begin, at the first technical meeting, on December 21, 2021, Blanco proposed to the representatives of the communities that they make his proposals.

Lannes said in that appointment that Aragón would stay with "cross-country skiing and biathlon, pillars for us".

Nobody put up opposition and that first meeting was closed, then, with Blanco's indication that work should start from two blocks, "cross-country skiing and biathlon in Aragon, and alpine and 'snow' in Catalonia".

Mountain skiing was pending.

Everyone agreed, according to what was recorded on the video, on that first date, this time face-to-face,

María José Rienda

or Víctor Franco, in addition to

May Peus

, president of the Spanish Winter Sports Federation.

The rupture of the pacts they reached, led by Lambán, understanding that it was offensive to their community, has led the project, supported by the Government of

Pedro Sánchez

, to rupture.

Only a rectification from the president of Aragon, who has asked Sánchez for help without response, despite being from the same party, could save him in extremis, since the COE has had to postpone the visit of the International Olympic Committee commission twice .

Otherwise, at the beginning of next week the adventure will be closed.

There are numerous mayors, businessmen and leaders of communication groups in the Aragonese community itself who have pressured Lambán to back down, but this collides with the electoral gains of opposing a Generalitat with a sovereignist profile.

Catalonia has officially transmitted its willingness to continue alone, but the COE will not endorse a different project, that is, not a joint project, for 2030. If the Generalitat wants to continue alone it must be for 2034, and in this way it will be communicated by the president of the COE, who is the one who must present it to the IOC, to the Government of

Pere Aragonés

.
