The World Swimming Championships in Budapest start on Saturday - but when the women's team race of 4x100 meters is freely decided during the opening day, there is no Swedish women's team on the pool edge.

Sarah Sjöström is not even in place then, Louise Hansson can concentrate on 100 meters butterfly - Olympic five last year and four in the world this year - and Sophie Hansson can charge for 100 meters breaststroke, European Championship gold and Olympic six last year , which begins on Sunday.

For several years, Sjöström has been the only Swedish medal candidate individually, but now that she has been joined in the world top by the Helsingborg sisters Hansson, it will be individual focus.

At least this time.

Double championship

It is also part of the matter that there will be an intense championship summer with both the World Cup and the European Championships in the wake of the corona pandemic.

The World Cup should actually have been decided last year, but then the Olympics went a year too late.

When Michelle Coleman also took a break from swimming, the choice was to give up 4x100 meters freely and instead let the swimmers focus on their individual programs.

The women's team then participates in the 4x100 meter medley on the last day, where they won gold at the short track world championships in December.

At 18 previous World Cups in history, it has only happened once before that Sweden did not start in the women's short freestyle competition - 1982 in Ecuador.

Last year at the Olympics, the team was six.

- It was a difficult decision to make, but I chose that we swim with the team at the European Championships instead.

If we are to participate, we will fight for medals, not for a final place, says Aronsson.

"Never so fresh"

Sarah Sjöström has removed 100 meters butterfly from her WC program and competes in three individual distances, 50 and 100 meters freestyle and 50 meters butterfly.

She arrives in Budapest only on Sunday night and competes for the first time next Wednesday in the 100 meter freestyle.

The rest of the national team - except for Björn Seeliger who also goes later - will go to Budapest on Wednesday.

- It feels good to come in later.

I will never have been so fresh on day five of a championship, says Sjöström about his setup.

The super Swede - who has won eight gold and 16 individual medals at the long distance WC in her career - is the fastest in the world this year in both the 50 meter freestyle and the 50 meter butterfly.
