 The Secretary-General of the Basketball Association, Salem Al-Mutawa, revealed the registration of 1387 players, who participated in the basketball competitions for the 2021-2022 season in all its categories and stages, distributed among 1121 citizens and passport holders, and 255 of the categories of children of citizens, residents and children born in the state, in addition to 11 foreign professionals who participated in men's competitions.

Al-Mutawa told "Emirates Today", "The joining of new clubs to the basketball activity, especially at the level of the age groups, and the tireless work of the clubs in attracting the groups covered by the President of the State's decision of 2017, to allow passport holders and children of citizens, residents and newborns to actively participate in sports The UAE was behind the recording of significant increases in the number of players, reaching in the season ending 2021-2022 the registration of 1,387 players, distributed among all ages, from men to buds, to academies and schools.

He explained: “With a simple comparison between 2018 and the current season, the clubs’ efforts have resulted in attracting 10 times more categories of children of female citizens, residents and newborns, while adhering to the condition of the resident player listed in the Basketball Association, which stipulates the passage of three years of his residence in the country as a minimum to allow him to be registered and allowed By participating, the efforts of the clubs were combined with the tireless work of the Game Association, which resulted in cooperation with the sports councils in the country, increasing the number of clubs practicing the game, especially at the level of the age groups, including, for example, Al Hamriya Club, which succeeded this season and in its first year in attracting and registering 24 players in The buds categories, before the club’s team can reach the semi-finals of the competition’s Sunni stage.”

He added: "The percentage of registration of children of female citizens, newborns and residents in 2021-2022 amounted to about 19.68% of the total number of registered players, most of which came in the age stages, which reflects the extent of the clubs' interest in attracting talent at the state level, to achieve maximum benefit from them in the future in supplementing the Emirati basket with elements Qualitative, especially since the participation of these groups is limited by binding conditions from the federation in the matches, based on a fair distribution on the pitch between the citizen players and the rest of the other groups.”

Al-Mutawa referred to the active role of the academies and schools listed within the clubs in increasing the number of players registered in the lists of the Federation, and said: “The 2021-2022 season witnessed the participation of the (Dubai Tribe) and (Prime Sport) academies in many competitions of the age groups, which allowed 42 players to be registered. From the categories of residents and births, and we look forward next season to expanding the circle of academies included in the lists of the Federation, in order to serve the provision of more talents capable of serving the Emirati basketball.”

He continued, "The partnership between clubs and government schools has succeeded in attracting 48 citizen players, and perhaps the most active of them are Madame and Maliha clubs, who registered in the 2021-2022 season about 22 citizen players from schools."

He concluded: "The Basketball Association, with the concerted efforts of all, is looking forward to continuing to work to attract talent in the country and to increase the number of practitioners of the game, as it is expected that the new season 2022-2023 will witness a significant increase in the number of players registered in the lists of the Federation, especially with the presence of six Clubs that will add teams to them at the higher age levels, whether in youth, juniors and even cubs, or with the return of other clubs that had previously froze the activity of the game last season.
