Golf professional Rory McIlroy won the tournament in Toronto/Canada on the PGA Tour and thus defended his title.

The Northern Irishman secured his 21st tournament victory with 261 strokes in front of the two Americans Tony Finau (263) and Justin Thomas (265) at the $8.7 million event.

McIlroy had already won the title at the Canadian Open in 2019.

The tournament could not be held in 2020 and 2021 due to the corona pandemic.

"It feels really good," McIlroy said after his strong final round of 62 at St. George's Golf and Country Club.

"Having a week like this at the Canadian Open, it doesn't get much better than that." For his 21st victory on the US tour, the 33-year-old received prize money of around 1.57 million US dollars.

It was also a special moment for McIlroy because his success overtook Greg Norman (20 Tour victories).

The 67-year-old Australian is CEO of the Saudi-funded and highly controversial LIV Golf Invitational Series.

“I was extra motivated.

The guy leading this tour has 20 wins on the PGA Tour and I was level with him and I wanted to get past him.

I did that," McIlroy said to Norman.

The PGA had banned 17 participants in the controversial LIV series from their competitions last week.

Martin Kaymer is also one of them.

The tournament was won by the South African Charl Schwartzel.

He has nearly $5 million in earnings, more than all of his previous four years combined.

"Where the money comes from is not something I've ever looked at playing in my 20-year career," said the 37-year-old after his win in London.

After three days on the par 70 course, Kaymer came in 16th in a field of 48 participants and collected 245,000 dollars in prize money.
