Benfica reach agreement to transfer Nunez to Liverpool in a huge deal

Benfica announced early on Monday that it had reached an agreement on the transfer of top scorer Darwin Nunez to Liverpool, for an initial fee of 75 million euros (78.58 million dollars).

Benfica said in a statement that the value of the deal may rise to 100 million euros, according to variables.

It is expected that the Uruguayan striker Nunez, 22, will undergo a medical examination today to complete the most expensive deal in Liverpool's history.

Press speculation indicates that the contract term is six years and Nunez will enhance coach Jurgen Klopp's attacking options, amid expectations that Senegalese Sadio Mane will leave for Bayern Munich, the German champions this summer.

Nunez's level impressed everyone last season when he scored 34 goals in 41 games with Benfica and scored Liverpool's goal in the Champions League when the two teams met in the quarter-finals.

The total value of Nunez's transfer exceeds the most expensive deal for Liverpool, when he included Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in 2017, for 85 million euros, according to press reports.
