Football pro Devon Allen just missed the world record over 110 meter hurdles at the track and field Grand Prix in New York.

The 27-year-old American ran the third-fastest time in history at 12.84 seconds, just 0.04 seconds short of the ten-year-old record set by his compatriot Aries Merritt, who set 12.80 seconds at the 2012 Diamond League final in Brussels had run.

Second place in the race went to world champion and Olympic silver medalist Grant Holloway (USA), whose best time was 12.81 seconds.

Allen signed a three-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League (NFL) in April.

Previously, the former varsity wide receiver at the University of Oregon had not played the sport for six years.

The highlight of his football career so far was a win in the finals of the 2014 college football championship, in which he won 51-13 with the Oregon Ducks over the Arizona Wildcats.

Devon Allen was then named America's fastest college football player.

At the so-called NFL Pro Day this year, the scouts of various clubs noticed him because he had sprinted 40 yards in 4.35 seconds.

Allen stood in the 110-meter hurdles in the 2016 and 2021 Olympic finals.

In Tokyo, he just missed out on a medal in fourth place in 13.14 seconds.

Now he has announced that he wants to take part in the US championships at the end of June in order to qualify for the track and field world championships in Eugene/Oregon in July.

Only then should his full attention be devoted to football.
