The decision was voted through on Tuesday at the International Skating Union (ISU) Congress in Phuket, Thailand.

- It is a historic decision, says ISU chairman Jan Dijkema according to AFP.

The proposal already existed before the Olympics

A total of 100 countries voted in favor of the decision, while 16 were against.

A proposal to raise the age limit for competitors in the senior class from 15 to 17 was already on the ISU's table when the doping scandal broke out in the Olympics.

The young Russian shooting star Kamila Valieva was arrested for doping in Beijing.

She was suspended but after the appeal she was allowed to participate in the ladies' competition, partly due to her young age.

The doping investigation is not yet complete.
