The former Iraqi national team player, Haider Abdul Razzaq, died of a serious injury as a result of an attack a few days ago at the hands of "unidentified persons" in the capital, Baghdad, according to what was reported by the Iraqi News Agency.

And sources told the official news agency that "5 people - including armed with metal pipes - attacked the player in the Qadisiyah area (central Baghdad)," noting that the reason for the attack was not known so far, according to what was reported by local media.

After the attack, Haidar was transferred to a hospital in the capital, where he received the necessary treatment and first aid, "but he died of his injuries.

And the Iraqi accounts on social networking sites were filled with pictures of the player as an expression of sadness for his loss.

Abdul Razzaq, 40, is considered one of the distinguished defenders, and he previously participated in the victory of the Iraqi youth team in the Asian Youth Championship in 2000, and also participated in the finals of the Youth World Cup in Argentina in 2000, as well as one of the contributors to the victory of the Iraqi team in the Asian Nations Championship 2007.

The player participated in several local, Arab and continental championships within the national teams, and the Student Club, in addition to his professionalism in many Arab and Gulf clubs.

A number of athletes and media persons attended the funeral of Haider Abdul Razzaq from the Neurological Wholesale Hospital in Baghdad, where he died.

Sadness pervaded social media in Iraq, and activists in these media expressed anger at Haider Abdul Razzaq's exposure to what was described as a "treacherous assault."

Haider Abdul Razzaq, after his retirement, worked in the administrative field, and supervised the student team for several seasons.
