Former French star Christian Karembeu said that Argentine star Lionel Messi, the French football player of Paris Saint-Germain, deserves more respect than football fans in France.

The Paris Saint-Germain fans had mocked the two stars, Messi and Neymar, during the match in which the team faced Bordeaux after being eliminated from the European Champions League by Real Madrid.

The Argentine star scored 9 goals and assisted 13 goals for his teammates in 32 games in all competitions with Paris Saint-Germain, which is a disappointing performance after moving to the team from Barcelona.

With a total of 22 goals per season, this is his worst scoring record since the 2006-2007 season.

Karembeu, who won the World Cup (1998) and Europe with the French national team during his career, believes that Messi should take a leading role in Paris Saint-Germain, to help him shine again.

And he said - in statements - to Radio Super Deportivo, "When Messi plays, and wherever he goes, there is a big commotion, and this happens in France as well."

He added, "He is an exciting player, but he is also an attraction for the French league. Messi is more than just a player. We need to respect this man more in France, because he attracts people and this is very important."

He continued, "You cannot boo Messi because he is a star. This was a mistake by the fans, because if the fans showed him love and appreciation, it would be over."
