• Mazda CX-60 To compete in the big leagues

The Maxda CX-6, the older brother of the CX-5, is a model developed on a

new platform

that the brand is going to allocate to its larger models.

Specifically, the CX-60 appears to be sculpted from a block that is

4,745mm long, 1,890mm wide, and 1,680mm tall

.

At first glance, its appearance is

monolithic, robust

, with a hood perhaps longer than normal and sides with almost no creases that, according to Mazda,

allow better play with the effects of light on the paint

, among which a new Rodium White.

At the same time, we are facing a design in which

the Mazda seal is recognized

above all by the

very wide front grille

, with variations depending on the finish, and by the slanted headlights, Led in all cases.

stretch goal

Mazda

's new bet

is already launched and the goal to be achieved is ambitious.

On the one hand, making the new

CX-60, the largest and most powerful SUV that the Japanese brand has ever offered

, snatch sales from

premium brand

rivals with measurements close to 4.7 meters in length.

On the other hand, making the Japanese brand even more valued for

its design, refinement and technology

in the minds of drivers ;

that is to say, that it does not clash especially among aspirational German models.

eastern elegance

The

interior impression

is excellent;

We are talking about the visual aspect, simple but elegant, and the materials and finishes (for example, an original zigzag stitching), which are linked to traditional Japanese cultures.

But also

comfort

, which is based above all on two aspects:

ergonomics

, with the gear selector and the HMI system wheel very close at hand;

and the driving position itself, very comfortable because the seats are very comfortable, the

transmission has been narrowed

so that the pedals are more aligned with the steering wheel and the central armrest, at the same height as the door, is very long.

In this sense, the novelty is a system that offers you an

ideal driving position in

terms of seat, steering wheel, height of the projection on the HUD and mirrors, all after you enter your height into the system and the position of your eyes.

The process is very fast, but being convinced by the suggested position is just one possibility that in our case was not fulfilled.

At the front we must add

two 12.3-inch screens

and a very large

HUD

, which show the technology of a car that now offers you notifications about tire pressure or upcoming checks, allows you to open and close the doors remotely, send a destination to the browser, etc., all through the

MyMazda

application .

And behind, the best thing is the

space for the legs

, superior in about 5 cm to the one offered by the already spacious CX-5.

Passengers who will not travel 'empty' with 570 liters on their backs, a small part of them belonging to a hidden lower compartment.

Regarding the engines, and although there will be

gasoline and two diesel variants

with

48V

technology (all six cylinders in line), the first to be on sale is the plug-in

hybrid

, first with this technology from the Japanese manufacturer.

It has a 2.5 Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine with

190 hp and 261 Nm of torque

, to which is added another electric one with

173 hp and 270 Nm

.

In total ,

327 hp

and no less than

500 Nm

make the brand's first plug-in hybrid the

most powerful Mazda in

history, which allows it to go from

0 to 100 in 5.8 seconds

but not stand out at top speed, because it has been limited to

200km/h

.

63 km electric

The transmission is always

8-speed automatic

and has cams, which are used to act on the thermal engine but do not allow changing the regeneration mode by going in electric mode.

And the traction is

total i-Activ

to all four wheels, but with predominance on the rear axle and greater or lesser distribution to the front train depending on the needs of the terrain.

This traction system is the one that the six-cylinder diesel and gasoline models will also mount, but for these they will also be available only with

rear propulsion

.

The plug-in CX-60 will have the

'0 Emissions'

badge after having approved

63 km in electric mode

and as long as we do not exceed 100 km/h.

And it takes no more than

2h 20'

to recharge its

17.8 kWh

battery from 0 to 100% on a 7.2 kW charger.

In addition to the non-polluting mode, the CX-60 can be driven in

Sport, Normal, Off Road and Towing

modes , the latter with operating maps that smooth driving when towing heavy loads, which can be

up to 2,500 kg

.

That there is almost no evidence of the entry into operation of the thermal engine certifies that the passenger compartment is very well soundproofed.

But it has caught our attention that the differences between the different

driving modes

are very little appreciated , and especially between

Normal and Sport

, in which only the reaction of the accelerator gains force.

In fact, the touch of the

electric power steering

does not change either , a little harder than expected (perhaps to give a more sporty feeling) let's go in the way we go.

cornering comfort

In a car weighing 2 tons (the 48V versions will be lighter), which also has a

fairly long wheelbase

(2,870 mm), its good poise on twisty roads is striking.

It's not that he's fast or reactive, no;

it is about keeping the line

very faithfully

to what the steering wheel orders and with a

very high degree of comfort

.

The new Kinematic Posture Control (KPC)

technology has a lot to do with the latter

, which in short, what it does is apply very light braking to the inner rear wheel when we are tracing a curve in order to reduce the rolling of the bodywork.

We insist that it is more of a measure in search of comfort than safety, and also does not add extra weight to the car because it uses systems and physical and electronic elements that are already common.

For the rest, it was to be expected that its technological cargo would include extensive measures under the

i-Activesense umbrella, such as

adaptive cruise

control

, which can incorporate a system to adapt to the limits announced by the signals;

the

city braking

system , which uses a front camera to also capture pedestrians even at night;

lane

departure warning

with steering assistance;

rear traffic

alert

, etc.

And among them, the See-Through View

stands out for its novelty

, which shows the four corners of the car on the infotainment screen so that we do not scratch the car in complicated areas, such as alleys or narrow parking lots.

Finishes and technology

The CX-60 can now be ordered in four different trim levels:

Prime Line, Exclusive-line, Takumi and Homura

.

The first comes with 18" wheels, it sports a black honeycomb-shaped grille and incorporates full LED headlights, fabric upholstery, titanium-effect interior trim, six-position electric front seats,

Apple CarPlay and Android.

wireless

cars etc.

The

Exclusive Line

, meanwhile, is distinguished from the outside by incorporating gloss black B and C pillars, the front grille with silver accents and

20" wheels

. As for the interior, the

HUD

is standard, like the steering wheel and the

heated front seats

, the latter with regulation in 8 ways.

The Takuma

spec

uses gloss black accents for the exterior, including the 20" wheels, and offers contrasting

white nappa leather

, natural wood,

'hanging' stitching

(they follow a handcrafted pattern called

Kakenui

). Otherwise, its technological equipment equivalent to the Exclusive Line with the Comfort degree.

And as for the

Homura

, also equivalent to the Exclusive Line with a Comfort grade, the styling details

opt for a sportier look

, with a front bumper whose lower part is wider, a grille with a honeycomb pattern and an interior of tonality black.

The prices of the CX-60, currently only available in a plug-in hybrid version, start at

50,268 euros

for the Prime-Line version,

51,818

for the Exclusive-Line,

57,018 euros

for the Homura and

61,868 euros

for the Takumi.
