Veronika Stepanova, 21, took home the gold in the last leg of the women's Olympic relay.

Recently, she paid tribute to Russian President Vladimir Putin in a post on social media.

Shortly afterwards, pictures were wired out of the Kremlin, where she and some other Russian athletes received a medal from Putin.

"Only we, the Russians, will forever decide how we want to live and who will be our leader," she writes.

Stepanova: "We will definitely win"

Stepanova also gave a speech after receiving her signed medal from the Russian president.

- In my eyes, Russia has once again become strong, proud and successful.

Not everyone in the world likes it, it's obvious, says Stepanova in a summary from the TV channel Pyervyj.

The star continues:

- But we are on the right track, and we will definitely win, just like we won at the Olympics.

Stepanova's Putin tribute

Stepanova praises Putin.

- I am very proud that today I receive such a nice award from our country's president.

Thank you so much for raising the country's flag high, we will continue with that, she says.

Maja Dahlqvist on Stepanova: "Not healthy"

Swedish sprint star Maja Dahlqvist reacts strongly to Stepanova's words.

- I have seen an article that she met Putin and praised him, I thought it was sick.

 - Then I am no more familiar than anyone else, but if you back Putin, it is not healthy, she says to SVT Sport.

When do you think you can compete against Russian skiers again?

- No idea, it feels like it depends entirely on the world situation and what happens, during war, skiing does not become so important, Dahlqvist says.
