Barcelona extends Araujo's contract until 2026.. with a cup of "mate" (video)

Barcelona has extended the contract of Uruguayan international defender Ronald Araujo until 2026, the Catalan club announced in a statement on Tuesday.

Barcelona set the value of the penalty clause in the Uruguayan's 23-year contract at one billion euros, a fictional amount similar to that set for its young players whose contracts have recently been extended, such as Ansu Fati and Badri.

Araujo has been defending the colors of Barcelona's first team since 2019 after he was contracted with "Blaugrana" until 2023, when he joined the reserve team in the summer of 2018 from the Uruguayan Boston River.

The Catalan club announced the extension of the contract via a video posted on Twitter showing Araujo sipping mate (a popular hot drink in South America) with the 2026 stamp on the mug.

The Uruguayan has become one of the main pillars of Barcelona's defense since Xavi assumed the duties of supervising the team last November, succeeding Dutchman Ronald Koeman, and he played 39 games this season in all competitions.
