Milan jump to the top of the Italian league with Tonali's killer goal against Lazio

AC Milan snatched the top spot in Serie A thanks to a deadly goal from Sandro Tonali in stoppage time, narrowly beating hosts Lazio 2-1 despite falling behind with an early goal on Sunday.

Ciro Immobile took the lead after just four minutes, but Olivier Giroud equalized in the 50th minute.

Milan pressed with full force, and veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic rose and headed the ball towards Tonali, who paved it for himself and then shot from close range into the net in the second minute of overtime.

Milan's tally of 74 points from 34 games, two points behind its rival and neighbor Inter Milan, the defending champion, who played 33 games and won 3-1 against Roma on Saturday to achieve his third victory in a row.

Lazio is ranked sixth with 56 points.

Milan found itself late with a goal from Italy striker Immobile.

Milan created several chances to equalize in the first half, hitting 12 balls against Lazio, but without hitting the net.

Milan continued to press after the break, equalizing with France striker Giroud.

Veteran Ibrahimovic participated in the search for victory, and helped his team to grab the three points with a header to Tonali, to continue Milan's quest for the league title for the first time since 2011.

Milan coach Stefano Pioli praised his players, saying, "It is right that we feel satisfied and happy because of our black players."

"They get a little bit of praise, but they have proven their strength. There are four matches left and all the matches have to be won. I don't know if we will succeed, but we are very strong," he told the (Dazon) online platform.

"There is no very young team that is fighting for the Italian league title. I ask the players to give their best, and now we have to throw ourselves towards the title. Let's play the next match with the greatest enthusiasm possible, and it is useless to think about things in the distant future."

In another match, Salernitana achieved its third win in a row and beat Fiorentina 2-1, to advance to 18th place, three points behind the safety zone.
