• Despite the great success of Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday against the Girondins de Bordeaux (6-1), Houssem Aouar was booed when he entered the game on the lawn of Parc OL.

  • The Lyon attacking midfielder, who will face Brest on Wednesday (9 p.m.) gave an interview to

  • The 23-year-old player confides in particular on his vision of football and his annoyance at seeing his career trajectory being commented on everywhere, since his hatching at 19 years old.

Conspired on Sunday when he came into play against Bordeaux (6-1), Houssem Aouar is having a difficult new season with his training club.

The attacking midfielder, whom OL supporters mainly blame for his irregularity and the lack of sharpness in his strikes and his defensive efforts, gave an interesting interview to

Liberation

, published on Tuesday.

"I find that we judge a lot in relation to what a player can bring, when we should judge him on what he brings", explains for example the number 8 from Lyon, under contract until 2023. He then looks at his personal trajectory, marked by a superb Final 8 of the Champions League, in August 2020, and by his non-starting that summer, when almost everyone already imagined him spinning at Arsenal or Juve.

Since I was 19, I have heard: "If he is there at such an age, he must do this, then this, then this again".

And we drew my own path.

But it's mine.

When people say that I didn't leave because I was less well, no one knows.

For two years, every summer, we get into my head.

But I didn't say anything.

I play at OL and it's a big club, with lofty goals.

And I'm only 23: I have a playing life ahead of me.

When I stop, we can ask ourselves and say: "There, he was like that, he did that".

Not before.

“No one can read football through a statistical grid”

We can only appreciate another passage from this interview, which is reminiscent of the vision of football of a player who also trained at the Plaine des Jeux in Gerland, Karim Benzema: "No one can read football at through a statistical grid.

When you play as an attacker, football is imbalance.

And I don't know of any statistics that measure the imbalance."

Houssem Aouar, who admits having played "only two games without having pain" in 2020-21, indirectly evokes this reputation as a miserly esthete in defensive races which is starting to stick to his skin in Lyon: "Sometimes, I had the impression that a player with fluid gestures, elegant with the ball, was quickly suspected of not making the effort".

A reflection that he was probably able to do again, Sunday at Parc OL.
