The death of German striker Joachim Streische "Gerd Muller East"

Former East German striker Joachim Streische has died at the age of 71, after suffering a "prolonged illness", his former club Magdeburg announced on Saturday.

Streiss was nicknamed "Gerd Muller of the East" after the late West German striker who exhausted the defenses of opponents in the same era.

Streiss scored 55 goals in 102 international matches with the East German national team between 1969 and 1984, and a total of 223 goals for Magdeburg in 321 matches between 1975 and 1985, after his brilliance with Hansa Rostock.

"Joachim Streiss will remain in the hearts of all club members and all fans, and we will always proudly remember our top scorer," the German club wrote in a statement.

During his career, he won the East German Cup three times, the player of the year award twice and four times the top scorer title.

With the East German national team, he won bronze in the 1972 Olympics. He continued his coaching career with Magdeburg and Eintracht Brunswick in the Second Division.
