For over 50 years, the Swedish rally had been arranged in Värmland when the classic competition was forced to move to Umeå before this year's edition in February.
In terms of organization and weather, it was a success, but not financially.
“The biggest problem is all costs linked to the ground conditions around the competition distances.
These costs are completely new to us as organizers and we are talking about really large sums ", writes Swedish rally's CEO Glenn Olsson in an email to SVT Sport.
"In our calculation before the move to Västerbotten, these sums were not included at all and to meet these new costs with new income, I see as overwhelming for us as organizers."
The amount has risen many times over
The problem with the increased costs for the use of land and roads was discovered in the autumn when Glenn Olsson started working on the agreements.
Olja tells Nya Wermlands-Tidningen that the permits in Värmland cost a maximum of SEK 50,000.
Now the amount has risen many times over.
- It is millions of kroner we had in increase on permits to get to distances.
It is not sustainable that we can run the event with millions in losses, neither this year nor in the future.
We do not have that economy.
Then a lot of new income must be generated to match, and it is not quite simple, he tells the newspaper.
The Swedish rally also lost almost 40 percent of the turnover of audience visits and customer events compared with the best years in Värmland before the pandemic.
"In visitor volumes, we have had around 100,000 visits (entrances) during the weekend, compared with a maximum of around 200,000 in previous years," Olsson writes in the email.
Hope to find a solution
Despite the financial challenge, Olsson, who is already in a dialogue with Umeå municipality, hopes that it will be possible to arrange the Swedish rally in Umeå next year.
“We have continuously worked and conducted a dialogue with Umeå municipality to deal with challenges around these new costs and also discussed its management in the future.
We completely agree to quickly start an investigation into these new costs, to enable future successful World Cup events in Umeå and Västerbotten ”.
