An eating disorder can have a negative impact on the affected elite athlete's mental state - something that in turn can affect decision making.

- That's when parents and coaches have to step in and say that it is dangerous and unhealthy, says Cynthia Bulik, professor of eating disorders, in SVT's documentary series "Eating Disorders".

According to Bulik, competition in eating disorders is associated with danger to life.

However, the elite athletes can ignore it and choose to compete anyway, she says.

- They have worked all their lives for a goal.

It is very difficult to realize that you have to give it up.

It's like taking away their identity.

- It is so important for coaches, parents and athletes to talk about this openly and for coaches not to cream out more competitions by anyone.

That's when people die.

The documentary series "Eating Disorder" consists of three episodes that are released once a week.

Premiere in SVT Play is April 3 and in SVT1 April 7.
