The Dutch professional cyclist Milan Vader, colleague of Olympic champion Primoz Roglic in the Jumbo-Visma team, is still in an artificial coma after his serious fall in the Tour of the Basque Country on Friday.

The Spanish media reported, citing the team and hospital spokesman on Saturday.

Vader had fallen on a descent on stage five and been thrown over the crash barrier.

Since the carotid arteries, among other things, were affected in the accident, Vader was operated on immediately in the hospital in Barakaldo near Bilbao, media in Spain and the Netherlands reported.

The athlete broke his collarbone, shoulder blade and several vertebrae, among other things, the hospital said.

His condition is very serious.

Jumbo-Visma did not want to officially announce any details for the time being, but announced that Vader's condition is stable.

He is receiving excellent medical care.
