An Olympic champion swimming through red water.

The pictures of the Lithuanian Rūta Meilutytė, who seems to be swimming calmly in a sea of blood, have a surreal effect.

But they are part of a protest against Russia's attack on Ukraine.

Activists painted a pond in the immediate vicinity of the Russian embassy in Vilnius red on Wednesday.

The action was intended to call for "action in support of the Ukrainian people facing genocide perpetrated by Russia," Meilutytė wrote on Twitter.

"The bloody pond emphasizes Russia's responsibility for committing war crimes against the Ukrainians." The Lithuanian, who won gold at the London 2012 Olympics and retired in 2019, called for continued support for Ukraine.

She also criticized Germany for not imposing adequate sanctions on the aggressor.

According to a police spokeswoman, the coloring of the pond in a public park near the embassy was coordinated with the environmental authorities.

The color is harmless, she told the agency BNS.

There have been repeated protests in front of the diplomatic mission since the Russian attack on Ukraine.
