Karim Benzema scored a new hat-trick to lead Real Madrid to a 3-1 victory over Chelsea at home, in the Champions League quarter-final first leg, today, Wednesday, which saw Villarreal win 1-0 at home to Bayern Munich.

The France striker scored a hat-trick in the previous meeting against Paris Saint-Germain to lead Real to another uprising, and approached the semi-finals.

In the stronghold of champions Chelsea, Benzema scored twice in the space of 3 minutes at Stamford Bridge with two superb headers to take the visitors 2-0 in the 24th minute.

Coach Thomas Tuchel's team did not give up, and reduced the difference through Kai Havertz before the end of the first half.

But Benzema resorted to his hobby of exploiting the goalkeeper's mistakes, and completed the hat-trick in the first minute of the second half after a wrong pass from goalkeeper Edouard Mendy to hit the empty goal.

The Spanish league leaders will have a greater chance of qualifying for the semi-finals when they play the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu next week.
